What is Stencil Systems Color Hardener?
The Stencil Systems Color hardener is a cement based product which when applied to wet concrete can create the color appearance of rustic brick, tile, stone and other similar type finishes. It is used for stencil, stamp or plain colored concrete, and comes in a variety of colors.

How thick is the product applied?
A minimum of 2 coats should be applied onto a surface of wet concrete to ensure that maximum Color Hardener strength is achieved. The thickness is dependant on the surface.

Does it crack or wear off?
When applied correctly, Stencil Systems color hardener is stronger and more durable than concrete. Stenciled concrete is no different than plain concrete when it comes to cracking. You will need to take the same measures to prevent cracking as you would when pouring plain concrete.

Is it slip resistant?
There are a large variety of techniques used to create a slip resistant surface. Please discuss these with your contractor, to ensure that you get the finish best suited for your site and requirements.

How long does it take to complete the Stencil Systems process?
This varies, depending on the preparation and technique required. Normally, the process can be completed in 2 to 3 days. The first day includes the site preparation and form work. The following day or days is for pouring the concrete, applying the stencil pattern and color hardener, cleaning and sealing the finished job.
However, as concrete does not reach full strength for 28 days, it is recommended that you allow at least 2 days before walking on the new concrete surfaces and allow a minimum of 7 days for vehicular traffic, depending on weather conditions.

Will the Color fade?
The pigments used in Stencil Systems color hardeners are inorganic metal oxides, which are extremely UV and chemical resistant. A maximum of 5% shading variation may occur over a period of 5 years, but this is barely detectable to the human eye. Stencil Systems recommends that a quality UV protect ant sealer be applied.

What are the advantages of Stencil Systems Concrete versus brick, stone, or tile?
Stenciled concrete can be reinforced to serve any structural need or purpose. Stenciled concrete is a more versatile option that offers multi-colored, patterned, and textured designs to compliment the existing structure. It is a lower cost, lower maintenance product. As concrete is the base, weeds and undulation will not occur.

How often do I need to reseal?
Depending on the type of sealer used, sealing is usually recommended 6-12 months after initial application. Follow the sealer manufacturers directions to maintain the surface quality.

Can Stencil Systems color hardener go over existing concrete?
No, color hardener is designed to be used with wet concrete only. Cover-tex is the product best suited to go over existing concrete.

How much does it cost?
The cost of the Stencil Systems installation depends on your requirements, and preparation required. We can provide you with the contact details of an experienced applicator for your area, please contact us for further details.

How many colors and patterns are available?
Stencil Systems offers 24 color hardeners, 16 release agents. We offer 25 stencil field patterns, 6 borders, 5 circles and a diamond, with more patterns to come. Custom-cut stencils are also available for logos and one-of-a-kind designs.

Is Stencil Systems for the DIY installer?

As each site is unique, specific preparation must be undertaken so that the concrete is placed in a manner which will ensure durability. It is therefore recommended that an experienced and/or licensed concrete contractor be used, so that a desired decorative finish is achieved, that will give years of enjoyment.

TEX-STAIN DESIGNER CONCRETE STAIN

What is Tex-stain acid staining?
Tex-stain is an acid and inorganic salt solution. A reaction takes place when this solution comes into contact with a suitable concrete surface resulting in a permanent surface color change.

What type of surface can Tex-stain be used on?
Tex-stain can be applied to many concrete surfaces and some cement based overlays. Typical applications are interior floors, cement tables, entrances/foyers, living rooms, and bathrooms. It is recommended that each intended surface be tested for stainability before commencing the project.

Where can Tex-stain be used?
Tex-stain produces the best effects on smooth, hard trowelled surfaces. This type of surface is commonly used for interior finishes. Tex-stain is often used in retail shops, show rooms, restaurant foyers, foyers, hallways and other similar residential and commercial locations.

What Tex-stain colors are available?
There are 8 colors; Black, Bronze, Green, Copper Green, Earth, Mid Brown, Walnut, Weathered Sandstone and Weathered Terracotta. However combining colors, applying one color over another can create many differing color effects.

Will the Tex-stain color I select on your Website or brochure appear the same on my concrete surface?
No. The stain may not exactly match the pictures shown. The resulting colors will vary as they are largely affected by the composition of the concrete and the application method.

Will the Tex-stain be a uniform color?
No. Tex-stain will produce natural variegated colors. The exact color will depend on the concrete, the color and amount of stain used, as well as the application technique.

What will the stain look like on my floor?
No two surfaces produce the same look. The final effect will be determined by a combination of the nature of the concrete and the technique used to apply the stain. The colors produced are normally variegated.

What are the basic steps for using Tex-stain?
1. Surface preparation
2. Staining
3. Residue removal
4. Neutralising
5. Sealing

How long will the Tex-stain process take?
The exact time frame required will depend on the complexity and the chosen application technique. Adequate planning will save time. Allow at least 4 hours between coats and adequate time for the surface to dry between washing and sealing (usually a minimum of 24 hours). Remember, you may need to draw out any patterns, etch, cut, sandblast or treat the concrete in other ways before applying the stain.

Is it necessary to sand the floor before staining?
It is important to test the surface for suitability and penetration. If no penetration is apparent, then sanding or using an etching gel are preparation techniques that may be considered. If sanding is used, a different effect may occur between sanded and un-sanded areas. Therefore, sanding may be considered as a technique to create a different look as part of the desired final appearance.

How long will it last?
Tex-stain penetrates and reacts with the surface. The stain is "in" rather than "on" it. Therefore, the stain is expected to have similar wear characteristics to the surface itself. Regular maintenance and reasonable in-service conditions within the design specifications may help prolong the life time of the stained surface.

Do I need to remove paint or other substances already on the surface?
Yes. All coverings, surface coatings or contaminants should be removed. These include (among other things), oil, grease, glue, plaster, dirt, dust, carpets, waxes, sealers and paints.

Can I use a curing compound on my slab?
No. Curing compounds may reduce or stop the stain reaction.

Is this a new product?
No. In recent years, acid staining has gained increased exposure and may seem new, but it has been around for about 80 years.

Why should I use Tex-stain?
Acid staining is a versatile decorative option that can combine many different techniques. Applicators can use this versatility along with their own creativity to create a unique effect.
